AT&T? Nah, JG&J

Amazingly, baseball managed to get a post here at the OG&B before basketball did, but thankfully not by much. With the first basketball practice only two weeks away (October 12), I expect that we'll be seeing a significant jump in basketball news over the next couple of weeks.

Today's W-S Journal reports that Gaudio is really excited about our three freshman this year, Jeff Teague, Gary Clark, and James Johnson. Good, I was worried he might hate them. Seriously, though, with all the hype surrounding Tony Woods, Al-Farouq Aminu and Ty Walker for next year it is good to know that these guys aren't just going to be lost in the shuffle from the beginning. Hopefully we'll see some solid performances out of them this season.

More importantly, what in the world was Dan Collins thinking when he wrote that subtitle -"Teague, Clark, Johnson to pave way for the really heralded 2008 recruits." "Really heralded?" Seriously? That can't possibly be good grammar. Maybe you could say "highly touted," "very special," or even "really good" would sound almost halfway decent. I expect more from a professional, but considering the many typos that I find on here a day or two later, I'm probably not really one to talk.

The Hunt for May

Maybe its a little early to start talking baseball around here, but Rivals.com's Wake Forest Baseball preview can't go unmentioned. Overall high praise for the team that finished strong last year but certainly disappointed to some extent in the regionals at Round Rock, TX.

I'm slightly surprised that Rembielak is most concerned about the offense, considering the number of solid returning starters we have. The Deacs have a lot going for them on the hill, with big things expected from Ben Hunter and Charlie Mellies, who is returning from injury.

There probably won't be a whole lot of baseball talk around here until the spring, but this solid preview from Rivals deserves a read.

What to talk about on a bye week? A backup at one position moving to a backup at another!

It’s a bye week, which means of course they very little is happening and we probably won’t have much significant news through this weekend. That being said, Dan Collins of the WS Journal reports that the Deacs are looking at moving redshirt sophomore Ted Randolph from tight end to defensive end, at least for this fall.

With two solid 5th year seniors ahead of him on the depth chart at TE, the move will certainly not have any negative impact on the offense. I'm not sure if he's played in a game, but Randolph has no catching or blocking stats. Defensively it’s hard to make any definitive statements about what affect the move will have, if any. What we do know is that he has some size (6-4 278) and having been a tight end at least a little bit of quickness, so perhaps that bodes well. Either way I doubt anyone could say much at this point since no one has ever seen him play on that side of the ball. I trust the coaches won’t put him on the field unless he is ready to contribute.

It’s pretty much a non event, but it can’t hurt to bring a little attention to it.

In other news (but the same article), Riley says his arm feels fine, and even felt 100% against Maryland. Sure Riley, sure. Nonetheless coach says he can’t use it as an excuse anymore, so I expect to see Riley very near 100% at Duke next week.

About the Old Gold & Blog (Updated Jan 1, 2008)

Welcome to the Old Gold & Blog - the Wake Forest Demon Deacon Blog

My name is Zach Smith and I am student at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. Being a first-generation Deacon from Texas I didn't grow up a Wake Forest fan, but I've definitely learned in a hurry over the last few years. At this point I'd consider myself as big a fan as any.

Where did the Old Gold & Blog Come From?

On September 27, 2007 the Old Gold & Blog opened for business with this post. The blog grew steadily over the next several months, attracting over 3,500 visitors in December, only the blog's third full month of existence.

On January 1, 2008 the Old Gold & Blog moved to it's current domain - OldGoldandBlog.com - and underwent a significant redesign. The hope is that the blog will continue to grow both in content and in readers. You are the key to fulfilling the second part of that goal. Thanks for visiting, and if you know other Wake Forest fans who might be interested in the Old Gold & Blog please let them know about it.

Why Old Gold & Blog?

The official colors of Wake Forest University are Old Gold and Black. The official student newspaper bears these colors as its name, and you can see here. The name of the blog is of course a play on words using the colors, however the blog is not officially related to the newspaper or the school - it is entirely independent.

I began writing the blog because I felt like there was a need for a site like this. I had been reading blogs about some of my favorite professional sports teams for several years and also occasionally blogs about other colleges. I realized that there was nothing similar for Wake Forest and decided to do something about it. This is the result.

How do I Stay Informed?

By far the easiest way to keep track of the blog is to use an RSS reader to make sure you get updated every time the blog gets updated. It's easy enough to do, just follow the RSS link at the top of the left sidebar. A full explanation of RSS can be found here. Otherwise, just make sure to check back at OldGoldandBlog.com frequently.

Thanks for visiting!

Pontiac We Have The Biggest School Performance of the Week

I know I’m biased, but come on ESPN… LSU for last weekend’s game changing performance? I realize that this comes down to voters and the fact of the matter is we don’t have nearly the voting fan base needed to outgun three big state schools, but this is the type of things that just begs for at least a little bit of a rant.

I’ll put some of the blame on ESPN; when the highlights of a game don’t even make SportsCenter on Saturday night, the chances of winning are incredibly slim. If we were going to win this thing we needed at least a little bit of hype on SC to generate just a little bit of word-of-mouth interest.

According to the results presented during Boise State’s 38-16 romp of Southern Miss, LSU’s play got 48% of the vote, followed by Georgia with 25% and Wake with 17%. I guess the only positive is that we didn't get last like Oklahoma State did with 11% of the vote, but when Alphonso Smith clearly had the best play and there’s no prize for finishing second, it’s hard to feel much consolation.

Right? Right.

Filling the Void

I’ve noticed a void in the sports blogging world, and regardless of whether or not I'm qualified, I’m here to do my best to fill it.

As far as I can tell, the Demon Deacons have no representation in the blogsphere. The closest thing is a blog affiliated with Wake Forest in the college football BlogPoll, but that blog is really just a general college football blog and pays Wake no special attention. I recognize that Wake is a smaller school with a smaller following and all of those things, but even if there are just a few readers interested, it just may be worthwhile.

So what qualifies me to write about Wake, or even just write in general? Really very little; I have no journalism background, nor any real interest in being a professional writer of any kind. Nonetheless I feel like I am a decent writer, and in the informal nature of a blog I should be just fine.

More importantly, though, I’m a huge fan of the Demon Deacons. As a current student I get to attend almost every major home sporting event, and do my best to watch those on the road as well. I’m not going to claim to be the biggest Deacon fan in the history of the world, seeing as how my family background has very little to do with Wake and I didn’t really become a fan until the last few years. Nonetheless, the fact that I now attend the school makes it my far and away favorite (but if I make an occasional comment about the Sooners, you’ll have to cut me some slack).

I’m the type of sports fan who always wants to know what’s going on with my favorite teams. I read the message boards, blogs, and newspaper articles on a daily basis, always wanting to know the most recent scoop. When I realized that Wake lacked a good sports blog, I decided to try my hand at filling that void. I hope you enjoy!
