Catching Up

Greetings WF fans!

It's been a tough weekend, as I'm sure you all know well enough. The Demon Deacon football team suffered a very tough loss to NC State, which all but ends our hopes at heading to Tampa.

However, don't quit on the team! As I said in my first ever post on the site; either you fully support this team, or you can hop off the bandwagon.

The men's basketball team is off to a great start with a 94-48 thumping of NC Central. The Deacs have a few more tune-up games, before heading out West for the Anaheim Classic.

Also, don't forget about our men's soccer team who suffered their first loss of the season in the ACC Tournament. Sure it's tough, but the National Title is till the goal for this team.

So with that said, I hope you all have a wonderful week, and be sure to look for a Q&A with some BC folks this week!

Back on the Winning Track

This weekend turned out to a pretty successful one for the Wake Forest athletic program. First off, I'm sure most of you are overjoyed by our 33-30 OT win over Duke this weekend. I was unable to see the game, but it seems as if Alphonso Smith had a huge game, and it's good to see him making an impact once again.

I'd also like to congratulate the mens soccer team. On Saturday night they defeated the Tar Heels of UNC, to clinch the ACC regular season title, and improve their record to 16-0-1. Congratulations to them.

Hopefully the win over Duke this weekend provided this team some momentum as they need it. This weekend the Deacs host a very very tough Virginia team. Gametime for that one is 3:30 PM on ESPNU.

Sorry I didn't get to see the game this weekend and give you guys some good in-depth analysis. I'm very happy that we won though, as this Duke team is no joke. Cutcliffe is making tremendous strides over there in his first year, and I don't think it should go unnoticed..

Tomorrow starts the work week, so I'll be back tomorrow night with some more news and notes. Also feel free to email me anytime at oldgoldblog@gmail.com, as I'm always open to your thoughts and suggestions. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend, and Go Deacs!

Vidovich gets 200th win in 6-0 defeat of UNCG

From media relations:

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Head coach Jay Vidovich picked up his 200th career victory and five different Wake Forest players scored goals as top-ranked Wake Forest (13-0, 4-0 ACC) defeated UNC Greensboro 6-0 (5-8-1, 1-2-0 SoCon) on Tuesday night at Spry Stadium.

“I owe a lot of thanks to the great players I’ve had here at Wake Forest ,” Vidovich said. “This senior class has accounted for about 50 wins on their own. Most of my success can be attributed to the players I’ve had the privilege to coach.”

Vidovich, the winningest coach in Wake Forest men’s soccer history, improves his career record to 200-81-27. He has won 69 percent of his games as the Demon Deacon head coach.

Five different players scored goals for Wake Forest in the game, including junior forward Cody Arnoux, who tallied twice in the game. Arnoux took a career-high nine shots in the game. Ike Opara, Zack Schilawski, Sam Cronin and Alfredo Rodriguez-Allen also scored in the game for the Deacons.

Junior goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald notched his eighth shut out of the season, making five saves. Fitzgerald is now in a tie for fifth for most shut outs in a single season at Wake Forest .

The victory extends Wake Forest ’s home unbeaten streak to 29 games, the seventh longest home unbeaten streak in NCAA history. The Deacs are also unbeaten in their last 37 non-conference games.

Wake Forest scored its first goal of the game in the 10th minute. A corner kick from Jamie Franks found the head of Opara, who scored from six yards out to give the Deacons a 1-0 advantage. The goal for Opara was his fifth of the season.

Arnoux added his first goal of the game just over three minutes later. Austin da Luz played a pass to Arnoux and his shot from 16 yards out beat the keeper to give Wake a 2-0 edge.

The Deacons extended their lead to three right before the end of the first half. Off a deflection from a UNC Greensboro player, Schilawski took a shot from 15 yards out that found the right side of the net for his fifth goal of the year.

Wake Forest scored goal number four of the game in the 59th minute as Cronin found the back of the net for the fourth time on the season. Cronin’s shot from 17 yards out in the right side of the box beat the keeper on the right side to extend the lead to 4-0. Arnoux was credited with the assist on the play.

Arnoux notched his second goal of the game in the 62nd minute. Evan Brown crossed the ball to the center of the field, finding a sliding Arnoux. Arnoux scored from five yards out for his second multi-goal game of the year. Corben Bone also received an assist on the play, his 11th helper on the season.

Rodriguez-Allen scored his first collegiate goal to wrap up the scoring. Danny Wenzel headed the ball forward to find Brown. Brown crossed the ball and found Rodriguez-Allen, who scored inside the six-yard box.

The Deacons controlled the game from start to finish, holding a commanding 28-7 shot advantage, including taking 17 shots in the second half. The Deacs had nine corner kicks, compared to just three for the Spartans.

UNCG goalkeeper Nate Berry gave up six goals in the game, making just one save.

The Deacons are back in action on Saturday night as they host ACC foe Duke. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (ET) and will be aired live on the web on ACC Select.

Wake up call: In need of a live blogger

First things first - I need someone to help run a live blog tomorrow night. Basically it just requires approving comments and providing your own commentary. Scott did a great job for the Navy game, but I'm pretty sure he said he has to work and won't be able to do it for this one. I think he'd tell you it's not too difficult (as long as we remember to flip the switch that allows comments!) Shoot me an email or leave a comment if you're interested and will have access to a computer during the game.

As for the news:

Very bad news from practice - Sam Swank is questionable for the game and will be a gametime decision. He strained his hamstring in practice Monday and did not practice yesterday. This is clearly not good, but I don't think it's cause for a freakout. First, Swank may still play, and second, Shane Popham is plenty capable. I don't expect this to be the difference in the game.

Also from the Journal - a game preview

The soccer team kept up the unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory over UMass last night. Good to see them continue to take care of business.

I've been trying to get a Q&A done before tomorrow but I'm having trouble getting in touch with the Block-C guys. I'll try to get something done today, but no promises.

8-2? Seriously?

I don't exactly know all the ins and outs of the game of soccer, but I do know that if you give up 8 goals you aren't going to be winning many games. That's what Virginia Tech did last night at Spry Stadium, as Cody Arnoux scored three goals, Ike Opara had two, and Austin da Luz, Corben Bone, and Marcus Tracy all added one each.

It was the most Wake had scored since 1997, and it was definitely a nice message to send in a rematch of a highly competitive game against a Virginia Tech team Wake last saw in the final four of the 2007 College Cup.

The Deacs are now 10-0 and 3-0 in conference play.

Wake up call: Soccer!

With my exams this week there was no way to get out to last night's soccer game, but it sounds like it was another good night, with Zack Schilawski scoring two goals on the way to a 3-0 win over Elon.

The Deacs move to 9-0 with the win. Pretty awesome start to the season!

I actually haven't had time to read this in it's entirety yet, but Heather Dinich did a pretty big feature on the Deacs today...looks promising.

Sorry for another quick one this morning, thankfully the worst of this week is over after today.

Wake up call: Soccer beats Maryland

Big win for Wake's #1 soccer team last night, as they defeated #2 Maryland 4-2 in College Park.

Sorry for such a short post this morning - family stuff going on.

There will be a live blog this afternoon, hopefully up and running about 3:30. If you're watching from home, it'd be great if you'd come participate. It was a lot of fun last week.

Wake up call: A winning weekend

Marcus Tracy scored the Deacs only goal against South Carolina on Sunday afternoon on the way to a 1-0 win and a 4-0 record to start the season. Tracy has a goal in all four games, which is pretty amazing to me. It'll be interesting to see how long he can keep that streak going.

Here's an interesting take on Saturday's game regarding its indication of Ole Miss's reemergence. It also might be the first time I've seen the word "mates" used in an article about American football. Go figure.

No surprise; Swank gets a helmet sticker and the ACC game changing performance for the week.

My preliminary blogpoll ballot will be up later in the day (hopefully before noon). Check back and let me know what you think.

Mens Soccer vs. UCLA

I'm headed out to Spry Stadium for tonight's soccer game against UCLA, but because of some other stuff going on I'll probably only make it to the first half. I was going to try to take my computer out there, but this on-and-off rain doesn't make me feel too comfortable about that so we'll have to do without for tonight. Late tonight or tomorrow morning I'll have some sort of report about what I saw.

Have a good evening!

Update: Wake defeats UCLA 3-0
I was at Spry for the entire first half and enjoyed seeing great goals by Lyle Adams and Marcus Tracy. Despite the wet conditions (including one several minute stretch of some pretty hard rain), the Deacs moved the ball well and generally controlled the game. UCLA is clearly a pretty good team, and to grab a 3-0 win like this is pretty impressive. It sounded like coach Vidovich was very happy that the team didn't let up in the second half, and even added another goal from freshman Nick Millington. Definitely a successful night for the Deacs, who will play South Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

Wake up call: Accolades

Two Wake Forest starts have received awards for their performances last weekend. Riley Skinner was named offensive back of the week, and Marcus Tracy was named College Soccer News player of the week. Congrats to both!

I joined the ACC Nation guys for their "beat the blogger" session this week, and also got to talk about last Thursday's win over Baylor. Listen here.

In the news today. . . wait for it . . . I'm sure it's here somewhere . . . nope, I guess not. As far as I can tell, absolutely no one wrote anything about Wake today. Funny how that happens.

At least I'm here, right?

Remember that analysis of the Baylor game I've been promising? Well I went back through the whole game and made a big excel spreadsheet of all the different things Wake did, planning to show you some interesting things like play type and formation by down and distance, summaries of what made scoring drives work, who made good plays and who didn't, and all kinds of other fun stuff. Only problem is, I'm having trouble getting Excel to cooperate and give me the types of summaries I want. I'll keep working on it and hopefully get it up today. At this point I'm past making any promises though.

I've got a brief commentary on the state of the ACC coming later in the day, and hopefully the Baylor report I mentioned. Then we can hopefully turn our attention to Ole Miss (and I guess Hanna) on Wednesday.

Wake up call: Strong start for soccer

The soccer team jumped out to a good start this weekend, beating VCU 2-1 on Friday and blanking Florida International 3-0 yesterday. Marcus Tracy had game winning goals in both games, Austin da Luz has a goal and an assist, Evan Brown has a goal and two assists, and Lyle Adams has one goal. Akira Fitzgerald has started well in goal, allowing one score and coming up with six saves. I look forward to seeing the team, 2-0 and ranked #1 in the nation in action first hand Friday night against UCLA.

Deacons Direct has a report on the Deacs who made final rosters in the NFL (sorry if there's something new at the top - can't link directly to posts on DD yet).

Dan Collins checks in with an early week report on how the guys are feeling about the Baylor win and their early thoughts on Ole Miss.

Here are some quotes from Art Briles following Thursday's loss.

Ron Green thinks it's already time to look towards basketball season in the ACC. Thanks, Ron, but I'm still having fun here.

Heather Dinnich showing Wake some love...not that she wouldn't do it anyway, but at this point she doesn't have much choice.

Late this morning I should have my week 1 blogpoll ballot up for your consideration, and this evening I'll have a detailed breakdown of the Baylor game ready as well.

Wake men's soccer scrimmage vs. Furman: Live blog

Wake up call: Women's soccer wins opener

I originially hoped to get out to the women's soccer opener last night, but due to the lateness of football practice and some other things going on it never happened. The Deacs won 2-1 and overtime, and the Journal has a bit of a report here.

I am almost positive I'll be at tonight's men's soccer scrimmage and will probably do some live blogging. Game starts at seven so stop by and check it out.

Elsewhere, Heather Dinnich at ESPN.com posted several Wake-related items, including this video (with Lou Holtz and Mark May showing the Deacs some love) and this post about Trey Bailey.

I'm headed to football practice in a couple hours. I should have a report up around noon. Enjoy your Saturday!

Wake up call: Scrimmage Day

The Demon Deacons will scrimmage this afternoon at 3:30, so check the blog this evening for a report. ESPN.com's Heather Dinich will be in attendance; I'm interested to see what she thinks of the team and the scrimmage.

Men's soccer had it's first practice yesterday, and not surprisingly coach Jay Vidovich says there's work to be done. It's going to be a couple of weeks, and I'm going to miss the first one on the 19th, but I should definitely be at the August 23rd scrimmage to give everyone an early look at this year's team.

Wake up call: Deadspun

I don't know how many of you are regular Deadspin readers, but I'd be willing to guess it's less than half of you. I don't know if I'm a true regular or not, but I do at least scan post titles there on a daily basis, so I'm pretty close. Either way, they're working through the top 25 right now posting previews by readers, commenters, bloggers, or whomever else volunteered to write for them. It wasn't me in this case, but the person who wrote about Wake did a pretty amusing job, even if it isn't entirely "safe for work." Check it out.

ESPN worked hard to cover the Deacs yesterday. Its work included this Mark Schlabach's column which basically predicted a Wake/Carolina ACC Championship game, and HD with another preview, this time about Grobe's system.

Someone doesn't know a lot about college football...he's surprised Wake is a 13 point favorite over Baylor, apparently because "The Big 12 is generally considered a strong (sic) football conference than the ACC." Sure.

No surprise...the men's soccer team is ranked #1 in the nation in preseason polls. John Dell of the Journal wrote a nice preview of the team here. I'm hoping to ramp-up my soccer coverage here pretty soon. I'm plan to attend most home games this season, particularly conference games and those that don't conflict with football games. I know we've got some soccer fans out there and I'm going to do my best to cover them for you. They are number one and the defending national champs, after all.

Leading Off

It’s been 10 days since I’ve posted anything, and I suppose I apologize for that, but I kind of needed the break. I guess I’m not really that sorry. I didn’t miss that much.

The summer will definitely be somewhat inconsistent around here. There will be a couple of stretches of about a week or 10 days where I’ll have pretty much no internet access so obviously there won’t be anything posted then. I’ll let you know when those are coming.

But still, even when I am around, I don’t anticipate there being a whole lot to report on (in fact I kind of hope there isn’t, because if there is I feel like it’s likely to be something bad).

I’ll definitely start doing some previewing of football season, but I don’t know how I want to do that yet or when exactly it will happen.

Also, I was thinking it might be fun to do some “reader editorials.” Basically, if you have an idea for something Wake-related you might want to write and have published on the blog, shoot me an email (oldgoldblog@gmail.com) and we’ll work on getting it done. Then you can tell all your friends to go read the article you had published on the internet (Just don’t tell them it’s on a site some guy started in his dorm room without any prior experience or knowledge and that you would have been just as qualified to start the exact same site—it might not seem as cool to them if you tell them that part).

Having said all that, I’m guessing there’s only about a 10% chance someone actually contacts me about it. I hope you prove me wrong.

I’ve got a couple of other things tentatively up my sleeve, so we’ll see what happens. No matter what happens this summer, though, come mid-August we’ll get back into the swing of things and you can count on reading new content on a daily basis.

On to a couple of specific notes: I highly recommend going to the official soccer page and reading about the soccer team's trip to Brazil. Sounds like a pretty cool deal.

Also, I believe that Wake's 3 game sweep of Duke over the weekend to close out Hooks Stadium means that they will make the ACC tournament, leaving them in position to potentially still make the NCAA tournament (I think it's a bit of a long shot, but it's certainly not impossible).

Someone posted this on the DeaconSports message boards and I thought it might be worth sharing just to get excited about the other sport that’s pretty fun to keep track of in the fall:

Wake Forest Soccer: Not Resting On Its Laurels

The fall of 2007 was an exciting time for Wake Forest athletics. Sure, the football team’s nine wins, including a Meineke Car Care Bowl victory over UConn, was great, but the real highlight of the fall was the soccer team’s National Championship.

Four months later the team is not idling basking in the glory of that accomplishment. Since the middle of March the soccer team has been participating in its own version of spring practice, and in their case it even includes a seven game exhibition schedule against other teams. After Friday night’s 1-1 tie with New Mexico at Spry Stadium I had the opportunity to talk with Coach Jay Vidovich about the team’s work this spring and the outlook for next fall.

“Spring is extended time for preseason,” said Coach Vidovich. “We’re fortunate that we’re one of the sports that has that opportunity to play during the spring. You don’t have your seniors around; you’re trying to find your new leadership, looking for people to step up; trying to find replacements for those players that left and just keep everybody developing. Fill the holes, find those pieces, find the leadership, and just develop everybody.”

So who is stepping up? “The team is stepping up as a whole,” said Vidovich. “The team is developing and working very hard, getting stronger, and their speed of play is quite good. Leadership-wise it takes awhile. Sam Cronin obviously was captain last year so he’s in an immediate situation where he’s a leader, but now he has to assume a different role because before he was with Julian Valentin. But all the upper classman - Marcus Tracy, Mike Lahoud, Jamie Franks - all those guys are doing their part.”

The soccer team is in a great position to accomplish a lot of things in the spring. Because all of the games are exhibitions, younger players and those who haven’t had much game experience get the opportunity to play full games. Multiple times this spring the Deacs have had two games in one day, as they did yesterday (Sunday).

On those two-game days “we’ll play two teams so our “second team” will get the opportunity to play a full 90 (minutes), which is a big thing for them now to have to step up and carry the game rather than just being in a substitute role,” explained Vidovich. “We’ve had a couple opportunities like that and a couple people have stepped up – Nick Courtney, Danny Wenzel, and Justin Lichtfuss.”

Defender/Midfielder Danny Wenzel is one of two 2008 recruits who have entered school this spring and are already practicing with the team. Wenzel has been getting playing time with the first team, while the second early enrollee and fellow D/M Chris Estridge has been playing more with the second team. (There’s a good write-up on all seven recruits on the official website here).

So what about next fall? Coach Vidovich is certainly excited: “I think it’s going to be a great year to be part of the program. There’s just tremendous seniority where guys have gone to a final 16, a final four, the national championship. These guys have been through a lot, so now to have them share their experiences with the freshman coming in and teach them the ropes and what’s going on should be a good situation. It will be very difficult for people to find time on the field.”

It’s great to hear that the team is having a productive spring. Fan interest seems to be remaining high for the soccer team following the championship; there were around 200 people at the game Friday night. I know I’m excited to watch this team in the fall as they try to defend their National Championship, and I plan on having Old Gold & Blog provide regular coverage of the season.

Community and Soccer: A Slow Wednesday

There hasn't been much of anything going on in Wake Sports since Saturday's basketball victory, and when that gets combined with two exams and a paper things here at Old Gold & Blog slow down. Hopefully I haven't let anyone down too much.

I don't think I'll be previewing the FSU game until tomorrow morning, but I've got a couple of other quick things to touch on for now.

Those of you who are students or still live in and around Winston may have heard about this, so I suppose this is for the rest of you. Yesterday the school announced plans for a $25 development on Deacon Boulevard next to the Joel and BB&T. Apparently they're looking to develop a village-like layout and atmosphere, and will feature new restaurants, shops and entertainment venues.

Since there is very little actual detail available right now I'm going to guess that I will never see this in my time at Wake, but nonetheless it's an interesting idea and it sounds like something that could really add some life to an otherwise dreary area. The athletic venues are nice, but almost everything else over there isn't.

The school's full press release is available here.

Secondly, I asked the school about Soccer recruiting stuff over the weekend and was told that Soccer doesn't have a big signing day deal like football does, so letters of intent tend to trickle in over a much longer period of time. It sounds like we won't here too much about them until that process is completed, but it also looks like I'll be able to talk with coach Vidovich sometime in the near future and ask him about these guys.

As of right now, here is the best list I can compile:

  • Dan Wenzel - Federal Way, WA - U-17
  • Sean Haglund - Raleigh, NC - CASL
  • Chris Estridge - Indianapolis, IN - Carmel United
  • Luke Norman - Rochester, MI - Vardar
  • Nick Millington - Raleigh, NC - CASL U-17
  • Doug Ryan - Statesville, NC CSC
  • Kyle Adams - GA - Georgia Lightning
  • Jesse Sokolow - McClean, VA - McClean FC
Some of that list came from SoccerMogul.com, the rest from sources on the message boards who are likely to know more about this than I. When I get official word on these things I'll let you know. Also, it appears that Wenzel and Estridge have already enrolled this Spring, which is probably a good thing for their development, much like it is for the football players.

That's about all I got for today. Happy Valentines Day Eve...or something like that.

Thursday Morning Happenings

No new injury news since last night, so I'm going to catch up on something that slipped off my plate last week: Soccer News!!!

Many of you probably already know, but last week Wake Forest soccer coach Jay Vidovich was named the NSCAA coach of the year at the same time three of Wake's best soccer players from this year's graduating class were drafted in the MLS draft.

Defender Pat Phelan went 10th to Toronto FC, while GK Brian Edwards and Defender Jules Valentin went back-to-back in the 28th and 29th picks to to Toronto FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy, respectively.

I'll be honest and say I haven't paid too much attention to previous MLS drafts and which Wake players have been taken, but I imagine this has been one of the best years the school has had in the draft. With the talent the team currently has I imagine it will only continue.

Also, coach Vidovich deserves lots of credit for the incredible work he's done here at Wake and was more than deserving of these Coach of the Year honors. Well done, gentlemen.

Around the Interweb - Jules Valentin & Basketball Resolutions

From time to time I find blog posts or articles that are off the beaten path for most Wake Forest News. "Around the Interweb" will be my way for sharing these with you and maybe even commenting on them myself. Enjoy!

I had never paid enough attention to know this, but Julian Valentin (of the men's soccer team) is from Lancaster, PA. His hometown paper recently did a feature on him, mentioning the 25 stitches he received for his facial injury from the national championship game and that Roger Espinoza - the player who put his boot in Valentin's face - called to apologize the next day.

Valentin is now preparing for the MLS draft on January 18th, and although I wish him all the best in his professional endeavors, we can all be glad they won't include a career in web design (Apparently made for a First Year Seminar at Wake. good stuff).

On an entirely different note, Paul Rugani from Blue Devil Hoops wrote a post on New Year's Eve that included "New Year's Resolutions" for each ACC basketball team. Regarding Wake Rugani wrote:

"Stop shooting 3s. Wake is under 30% from beyond the arc, but devote nearly 38% of their shots to the 3. Their most accurate outside shooter is Ish Smith, and that is not a good sign. Particularly problematic have been James Johnson (who has had an otherwise fantastic freshman season thus far) and LD Williams, who are a combined 19 for 83.
Will it be kept? Probably not. The Deacons have some guys who love to shoot the long ball - Harvey Hale, Jamie Skeen, Williams, Johnson - and so the attempts are likely going to stay near the current average of 22.75/game. Wake can only hope that Skeen, Williams, and Hale all see their percentages rise to where they were last season."
As much as it pains me to agree with a Blue Devil, I do agree with Rugani. Our three point shooting has definitely been atrocious and we'd currently be better off without it. Unfortunately I also agree that it's not going to change. The team loves the three-ball and although our inside presence is getting stronger, it's still not strong enough to nullify the need to shoot threes. We should be better at it than we are, but the fact remains that regardless of what we should be doing the shots aren't falling. Hopefully with more time our shooting will improve but it needs to happen in a hurry. Coach always says he wants to be averaging over one point per posession, but when we're shooting under 30% we're definitely not getting over 1 ppp from those posessions. Until we can make 1/3 of them they aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing. Something's gotta give.

That's all I got for this installment of "Around the Interweb." Hopefully I'll find good material regularly to keep it going!
